Daily Things, the latest album by Thomas Wendt, is another interesting project in which the saxophonist and composer subjects his understanding of contemporary jazz to a joint interpretation. There is a lot of logical consistency of the saxophonist’s previous sessions, but there is also a hefty load of spontaneous improvisation and wonderful creation of jazz textures hidden behind subtleties. “I’ve always been keen on the idea of storytelling with the instrument, not just simply playing. What impresses me most is when someone playing his instrument brings me into such a world, where I do not even think about instruments, notes, harmony, just feel emotions that cannot be written down on a piece of paper. I once came up with the idea that notes are a clumsy attempt at recording music. Without superimposing the sensitivity and emotionality of the player, they mean nothing. Indeed, I dream of constructing my albums as a certain whole, not just treating them as a collection of individual unrelated pieces. Just as paintings are always complete and we view them in their full glory. I try to make each of my subsequent albums a showcase, but also a reminder of the particular musical stage I’m at.” To implement this concept, Tomasz Wendt enlisted excellent musicians: guitarist Szymon Mica, double bassist Piotr Narajowski and drummer Michal Miśkiewicz. This is the elite of today’s Polish (and European) jazz, and saxophonist Tomasz Wendt is the outstanding leader and creator here.

Tomasz Wendt graduated with honours from the Academy of Music in Wrocław (Diploma of the Year 2014) already as a student of the saxophone class. He has been honoured with numerous awards (from Fryderyk 2017 to the laurels of national and international competitions and festivals). The saxophonist has worked with such prominent artists as Grzegorz Nagórski, Piotr Wojtasik, Mateusz Smoczyński, Joachim Mencel, Michał Miśkiewicz, Joachim Mencel, Rafał Sarnecki, Artur Lesicki, Kuba Stankiewicz, Urszula Dudziak, Eric Allen, Dean Brown or Taco Hemingway and Grubson. Tomasz Wendt’s debut recording, Behind the Strings, won critical and public acclaim (Fryderyk 2017); the second album, Chapter B., generated great interest and received excellent reviews; the latest one, Daily Things, is a showcase of the sensibilities of four improvisers interpreting songs inspired by the days of the week. It is a reflection on the issue of repetition and an attempt to capture the overlooked, fleeting emotions that accompany everyday life. Tomasz Wendt, Szymon Mika, Max Mucha and Michal Miśkiewicz combine their musical experiences in a new, uniquely emotional structure yielding a sound and mood that places their music high in European jazz salons.
