The representatives of the music scene in Wrocław, jazzmen from Katowice, Poznań and Szczecin, as well as an international cooperative – this year’s Grand Prix and prize money attracted nine young jazz bands. Who will be the winner of the contest? We will see on the 28th and 29th of March.
The submissions were accepted until the 31st of March. Out of 27 candidates, the Qualifying Committee, comprising Artur Lesicki, Bartosz Pernal, Igor Pietraszewski and Wojciech Siwek selected nine bands, who will have an opportunity to present themselves during the 53rd Jazz on the Odra Festival. Admission to the concerts will be free.
Finalists of the Jazz Personality Contest:
ADAM JARZMIK QUINTET (Adam Jarzmik – p, Jakub Łępa – ts, Paweł Palcowski – tpt, Maciej Kitajewski – db, Piotr Budniak – dr) Students and graduates of the Academy of Music in Katowice.
ŁUKASZ KOKOSZKO COLLECTIVE (Łukasz Kokoszko – g, Grzegorz Ziółek – p, Piotr Narajowski – db, Bartosz Szabłowski – dr) Students of the Academy of Music in Katowice with strong musical ties to Wrocław.
ADAM BŁAWICKI QUINTET (Dominik Gawroński – tpt, Adam Bławicki – ts, Filip Miguła – p, Bartłomiej Chojnacki – db, Piotr Zarecki – dr) A band, operating in the same, unchanged line-up since 2015, comprised of graduates and students of the Academy of Music in Wrocław.
JAN KANTNER QUARTET (Jan Kantner – sax, Piotr Szlempo – tpt, Bartłomiej Chojnacki – db, Dawid Opaliński – dr) A new hope of jazz in Wrocław – a band established early in 2017, made up of students and a single graduate of the Faculty of Jazz of the Academy of Music in Wrocław.
MICHAŁ NIENADOWSKI ENSEMBLE (Michał Nienadowski – db, Marek Konarski – ts, Maciej Czajkowski – p, Anders Lindhardt Madsen – dr) A Polish-Danish music band, created on the initiative of the band leader. The musicians live in Denmark, but they also contribute to the Polish music scene.
GLOBAL SCHWUNG QUINTET (Dawid Kostka – g, Seweryn Graniasty – sax, Adam Bieranowski – p, Damian Kostka – db, Maciej Burzyński – dr) The quintet was established in 2014 in Poznań by the two Kostka brothers – Dawid and Damian.
POLSKA REPUBLIKA JAZZOWA (Piotr Szwec – sax, Paweł Pawlicki – sax, Tomasz Jędrzejewski – p, Bartłomiej Chojnacki – db, Mateusz Maniak – dr) A quintet comprising graduates of the Academy of Music in Wrocław.
VIBE QUARTET (Michał Puchowski – vibes, Franciszek Raczkowski – p, keyb, Mateusz Szewczyk – db, gb, Max Olszewski – dr) The band, operating in Katowice, was established in 2016.
MICHAŁ MARTYNIUK TRIO feat. JAKUB SKOWROŃSKI (Michał Martyniuk – p, Krzysztof Baranowski – db, Adam Zagórski – dr, Jakub Skowroński – sax) Michał Martyniuk is a Szczecin-born pianist and composer, who lived for the last 10 years in New Zealand, where he completed music studies in jazz.
The contest concerts will start at 2:00 p.m. pm on both the 28th and 29th of April, at Impart’s Chamber Hall. Every finalist will present a 20-minute programme, including a mandatory element – an interpretation of a well-known jazz standard. The performances will be assessed by a jury of five, comprising: Paweł Brodowski, Paweł Kaczmarczyk, Darek Oleszkiewicz, Kuba Stankiewicz and Piotr Wojtasik. The commission will also give away monetary and in-kind prizes.
The prize pool of this year’s contest is as follows:
GRAND PRIX and the Mayor’s Prize – 25 000 PLN
ZAIKS Association Prize – 10 000 PLN
STOART Association Prize – 5 000 PLN
ORIS Prize – a limited edition of a watch made as a tribute to the creations of the legendary jazzman, Dexter Gordon.
JAZZ FORUM editors prize with a value of 3000 PLN – an advertising and promotional session in both on-line and traditional edition of the magazine.
Participation (Full Time Student pack) in the 2nd edition of the New York Jazz Masters workshop (Wojanów, 8-15th August 2017), funded by Echomusic Art Managment.
The laureate of the Grand Prix will also present their recital during the International Polish Jazz Day on the 30th of April at the Impart Chamber Hall.
