More Jazz… on the Odra

The September edition of Jazz on the Odra is going from strength to strength. A new project called Ladies first and a proposal for a jazz weekend in the open air have just been added to the rich festival programme.

Ladies first is an additional project which, although it goes beyond the date of the event, fits perfectly into its musical direction. At the invitation of Leszek Możdżer, Artistic Director of Jazz on the Odra, a concert consisting of two sets – Kasia Pietrzko Trio and Zawartko/Piasecki – will take place on 14 September on the stage in the Impart courtyard. Kasia Pietrzko is a pianist and composer who has quickly become not only a leading young artist on the Polish record market, but has also aroused considerable interest throughout Europe. In the pandemic year 2020, her trio presented its second original album entitled Ephemeral Pleasures. For the Zawartko/Piasecki duo, the September concert will be the premiere of their second joint album entitled Wagabunda. Inspired by specific culture, places and events, the musicians gave their music a unique direction. 9 themes brought from different parts of the world, e.g. Georgia, Morocco, Israel – combined with jazz improvisation will take listeners on a beautiful musical journey. Tickets for this concert will go on sale on 2 September, at 12:00.

According to the tradition of several years, jazz will also be heard outdoors, on the square in front of Impart. The weekend marathon will begin on 17th September (Friday) and will belong to Emil Miszk & The Sonic Syndicate – an octet consisting of the leading artists of the young generation in Poland and the Mariusz Bogdanowicz Quintet Silence, which will offer a synthesis of the leader’s previous works. On Saturday, the stage will be taken by one of the most versatile figures in Hungarian jazz-saxophonist Viktor Tóth and his Arura Trio and the Aga Derlak Quintet – the charismatic pianist will be accompanied by guests, Anna Bratek and Jerzy Małek. For the finale on Sunday evening, the Wrocław band EABS will play, presenting material from their third album Discipline of Sun Ra – more than two years after the performance of the Sun Ra Arkestra itself in the same open-air setting. During the weekend, we will also see the finalists of the Jazz Personality Contest 2021 competition and Wrocław DJs. Free admission to all events on the square in front of Impart.

This year’s edition of the Jazz on the Odra festival will run from 15 to 19 September. A detailed programme of the concerts, their locations and tickets can be found on www.jazznadodra.pl
