Jazz nad Odrą will return in the spring!

One of the oldest jazz festivals in Poland changes its date. The five-day festival of music will take place in April 2023.

Since 2020, a difficult time that turned upside down many plans made not only by the world of culture, the Jazz nad Odrą festival took place in Wrocław in the autumn. The last three editions were successfully implemented at Impart, Polish Theatre, Capitol Music Theatre and Vertigo Jazz Club & Restaurant. The upcoming 59th edition of the event will take place in April, a month that has been associated with the celebration of jazz in Wrocław for years. The organisers of the festival have planned five days of musical exultation – between 26 and 30 April stars of world and Polish jazz will play in the capital of Lower Silesia. Getting back to our usual time of the year is albso related to the perfect date for the final day of the festival – 30 April is the International Jazz Day, adopted at the session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2011.

There will be no shortage of auditions in the Jazz Individuality Contest 2023. The main prize is the Grand Prix awarded by the festival jury, which consists of outstanding jazz artists, journalists and experts. The winner will receive PLN 25,000 funded by the Mayor of Wrocław, and the Rybotrąbka statuette. The pool also includes additional prizes donated by the event’s partners and media patrons. The winner of the last year’s 58th edition of the competition was the Horntet band composed of: Bartłomiej Leśniak, Robert Wypasek, Szymon Ziółkowski, Mikołaj Sikora and Piotr Przewoźniak.

In 2023, the fifth edition of the Marek Karewicz memorial photo competition, MK Jazz Foto, will also be held.  During the festival, the organisers will present the final exhibition, which usually consists of 33 selected works. Since 2022, the jury also awards the Wojtek Siwek Memorial Special Prize for the best photo taken during the Jazz nad Odrą festival. The curator of the competition is Lech Basel.

The event is organised by Culture Zone Wrocław, and the function of the artistic director is held by Piotr Wojtasik – a trumpet virtuoso, excellent improviser and composer who has been speaking his own unique musical language for over 30 years. The author of the poster for the 59th edition of the Jazz nad Odrą festival is Lech Twardowski.
