Ahead of us are five days of concerts and night jam sessions. We will also meet the winners of the 2022 Jazz Individuality Contest. The 58th Jazz na Odrą Festival starts today.
This year, the artists will perform at two locations – the Capitol Music Theatre and Vertigo Jazz Club & Restaurant. The programme covers concert premieres, including Michał Barański presenting his album Masovian Mantra to be released under the legendary Polish Jazz label, and Jeremy Pelt with the repertoire from his latest album called Soundtrack. There will also be special projects – for the first time Dominik Wania, Darek Oleszkiewicz and Christian Lillinger will appear on stage as a trio. And Anna Maria Jopek will perform as a special guest invited by Piotr Wojtasik and his quintet. Those hungry for jazz adrenaline will be certainly interested in night jam sessions to be held at Vertigo on all festival days. On the last day, the winner of the main prize in the Jazz Individuality Competition 2022 will be announced.
Every year, several dozen ensembles from all Poland apply for the competition at the Jazz nad Odrą Festival and the winners are mostly the top musicians of all jazz generations. From the start, the festival has offered support to the young generation of the Polish improvised stage, knowing that they are successors to the present colossi of jazz. This year, eight finalists will compete for the title of Jazz Individuality 2022: Boogie Skiedrzyński, Brzeziński Quartet, Horntet, Kasia Osterczy, Krzysztof Baranowski Trio, Michał Ciesielski, Ola Przewoźniak Quintet and Superminimalism. The rich pool of awards includes the Grand Prix, that is PLN 25 000 funded by the Mayor of Wrocław, and the Rybotrąbka trophy, but also the cash prizes from the ZAIKS Society of Authors, the STOART Union of Performing Artists and the in-kind prize from Oris Polska. The finalists will be evaluated by the jury composed of: Darek Oleszkiewicz, Jeremy Pelt and Viktor Tóth.
The event will be accompanied by the exhibition of the 4th Marek Karewicz memorial photography contest, MK Jazz Photo. This year, as usual, the jury preselected 33 photos to be exhibited at the Capitol Music Theatre; the exhibition will open on 14 September at 4:33 PM. The prize winners will be announced during the first festival concert at 7:00 PM.
The event is financed from the grant awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage under the Culture Promotion Fund’s “Music” programme of the National Institute of Music and Dance.
The 58th Jazz nad Odrą Festival will be held from 14 to 18 September. Tickets are available at: www.jazznadodra.pl, www.strefakultury.pl and www.eventim.pl.
