A tribute to John Coltrane, world-class American drummers – Jeff “Tain” Watts and Kendrick Scott, saxophonist Tia Fuller, outstanding jazzmen in special projects, album premieres and performances by laureates of prestigious jazz competitions, all concluded by the Polish Jazz Day are the highlights of the 53rd edition of the Jazz on the Odra Festival in Wrocław – the oldest jazz festival in Poland. The ticket sales will start on the 10th of March.
Jazz on the Odra Festival will take place on the 26-30th of April. We are in for five swinging days with exceptional jazz musicians and the finale, filled with Polish jazz music.
Highlights of the programme and a tribute to John Coltrane
Among the most interesting concerts of this year’s edition is Coltrane’s Sound – a project dedicated to the late John Coltrane, whose 50th death anniversary we are commemorating this year – one of the most important musicians in the history of jazz. Ravi Coltrane, artist’s son, will be accompanied by the jazz ambassador of Wrocław in Los Angeles – Darek Oleszkiewicz. The programme will also feature women’s representation. We are going to hear an outstanding saxophonist and flautist Tia Fuller, known for her collaboration with the R&B star Beyoncé, in a jazz trio. The Impart Stage will also host the exceptional jazz improviser, Jeff “Tain” Watts, one of the most valued and recognisable drummers in the world. A cherry on top of the jazz cake will be the performance of a rising star, Kendrick Scott – an American drummer. The artist will come to Wrocław for the first time with his own project – Kendrick Scott Oracle.
Special projects and jazz competitions laureates
Jazzmen from Wrocław are already preparing some outstanding projects for this year’s edition of the Festival. Piotr Baron will perform with Gary Smulyan, Marek Napiórkowski will present WAW-NYC – an international concert, and Leszek Możdżer will play with last year’s Grand Prix laureate – Skicki – Skiuk. During the day, the Chamber Hall will be the site of a competition for the 2017 Grand Prix and the associated prize between eight bands, and at night it will turn into a stage for the winners of the leading Polish jazz competitions: Mateusz Smoczyński (Seifert Competition), Tomasz Chyła Quintet (Jazz Juniors), Tomasz Wendt (Jazz on the Odra) in a premiere project with the Atom String Quartet and Paweł Kaczmarczyk as Paweł Kaczmarczyk Audiofeeling Trio.
The International Day of Polish Jazz
This year’s edition of the festival will be concluded with the International Day of Polish Jazz. “The last day of April was declared the International Jazz Day by UNESCO, and we celebrated it last year, in connection with the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016. This tradition will be upheld. During this year’s edition of the Jazz on the Odra Festival, we will celebrate April 30th as the International Jazz Day… Polish Jazz!” said Krzysztof Maj, general director of the ECoC Wrocław 2016 and the Jazz on the Odra Festival. The motto of this year’s edition, POLISH JAZZ – YES, based on the title of the latest album by Zbigniew Namysłowski, will set the mood of the finale of the 53rd Jazz on the Odra Festival. “On the 30th of April, we will give all the festival stages to Polish jazz artists. We want the Jazz on the Odra Festival to become ambassador of Polish jazz music abroad. The International Polish Jazz Day is just a taste of this”, Maj added.
Starting early in the afternoon and going until late at night, the four Impart stages and the open air stage will be taken over by over a dozen of outstanding Polish bands, including Zbigniew Namysłowski Quartet, Piotr Wojtasik with Tribute to Akwarium, Cracow Jazz Collective, Eskaubei & Tomasz Nowak Quartet ft. Mr Krime, Magda Zawartko and Grzegorz Piasecki, Jachna/Tarwid/Karch Trio with Sundial II, Kuba Stankiewicz with his latest project – Music of Henry Mancini, as well as Tęgie Chłopy and Maurycy Wójciński. A special programme dedicated to Buddy Rich, an amazing drummer, will be prepared by his great fan, Zbigniew Lewandowski. Levandek became fascinated with Rich exactly 40 years ago, during the 14th Jazz on the Odra. Together with Bartosz Pernal’s Big Band, they will play the compositions by Killer Force.
The 53th edition of the Festival will also comprise accompanying events, such as a music market or exhibitions dedicated to jazz music – more details will be announced soon. The ticket sales will start on the 10th of March.
